Why do you need to train your team?

Training your team is an important part of running any business. It’s essential that your company meets all legal obligations and requirements.

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HASAWA)

You or your company have a legal requirement to meet the requirements of this act:

The Health and Safety at Work Act Explained

The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 is the primary piece of legislation governing workplace health and safety in Great Britain. There are also main pieces of regulation which are integral to managing health and safety at work. The implementation of these regulations does not have to be a daunting, time consuming or costly affair,

As a brief overview, the HASAWA 1974 requires that workplaces provide:

  • Adequate training of staff to ensure health and safety procedures are understood and adhered to
  • Adequate welfare and ppe provisions for staff at work
  • A safe working environment that is properly maintained and any operations within it are conducted safely
  • Suitable provision of relevant information, instruction, training and supervision

So, as an employer or self-employed, amongst your many duties, it’s your responsibility to ensure that you and your staff are well trained, confident in their roles, and able to carry out their duties involving any tools or machinery in a safe and skilled manner, this of course includes all lift trucks and lifting equipment in the workplace.

PUWER - Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations, 1998

These regulations cover any equipment which is used by an employee at work from lifting equipment and circular saws to knives and laptops.

To comply with these regulations you must ensure that the work equipment provided meets the requirements of PUWER, it must be used for suitable purpose and under the right conditions, to ensure that people’s health and safety is not put at risk.

Equipment must be maintained and inspected, to make sure that it continues to be safe for use. Inspections should be carried out by a competent person and a record kept which should be updated at the next inspection, Inspections are something we can help with. Adequate instruction and training should be provided for those involved in the use of any equipment.

Working with machinery can be dangerous, moving forklift trucks present a very real threat of injury, especially if the operator is not competent and trained in the use of such machinery. Before use it is vital that Training and instruction should have been provided.

Make sure that individuals using the equipment have the knowledge and risk awareness to use the equipment and that they are physically suited to the task.

Mobile work equipment that is used for carrying people must be fit for purpose and used in a safe manner, in a safe environment, where you can ensure stability and make sure that there is no risk of it rolling over or presenting a danger to the people being carried, the operator or anyone else.
